Born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, and living in Los Angeles, the five members of 311 - Chad Sexton (drums), Timothy Mahoney (guitar), P-Nut (Bass), SA Martinez (vocals, turntables) and Hexum (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) -- fuse various musical styles to form a sound distinctly their own. "Simply put," says Hexum, "our goal was to take rap and make it musical." What they ended up with is a potent fusion of hard rock, funk, rap and reggae that broke new barriers in popular music. Being extremely skilled musicians, they blend these diverse musical styles with an aggressive attitude, that surprisingly does not translate to anger. Having grown up in the middle of the country, where east meets west, 311 was provided with a perfect setting for their multi-dimensional sound. They started opening for Fugazi in 1990 and moved on to releasing three full-length albums and touring almost non-stop, selling out clubs and theatres nation-wide. These shows are a testament to 311's huge fanbase, but, not surprisingly, they have some musical idols themselves, from Bob Marley to Bad Brains to Nat King Cole. Their distinctive blend of their musical influences has made 311 a huge success with the surf/skate/snowboard scene and in popular music overall.
